This is a good question! Scientists have been studying the Bermuda Triangle for years. As you have stated, there have been a large number of ships, planes and people disappearing in that region that are not easily explained. To be blunt, nobody is absolutely sure why this is so. There are many theories. Some are clearly fantastic. Others make more logical and scientifc sense. You'll have to study the information and make your own conclusions. Since you have asked in general, one of the theories put forth makes a lot of scientific and oceanographic sense. I have done a lot of travelling in that region for work and believe this theory best explains what might be happening, but again, understand, this is just a theory. In short, the theory is that this area has a very high concentration of methane gas pockets under the sea floor. Many are very large and very unstable. When released, these gas pockets bubble to the suface of the ocean, affecting large areas of water and air above the surface of the ocean, up to many feet high. It is postulated that these gas disturbances may have caused ships to sink, airplanes to go down and other strange, normally unexplained phenomenon, like rogue waves, which could effect ships for instance, miles away from where the original disturbance occured on seemingly clear, cloudless days. There have been several shows on cable tv that have documented this theory and the evidence is pretty compelling, but still it doesn't answer every possible scenario. Still, its the best theory I've seen, so research and stay tuned.

On average, there are no more shipwrecks or plane crashes in the area known as the Bermuda triangle than there are in any other area of equal size in any ocean on the Earth (with the same density of shipping lanes). The "disappearances" at sea are pretty much normal; if a plane crashes into the ocean, the wreckage sinks...it disappears. The same applies to a ship or small boat. There are more storms at certain times of the year (the 6 months between June and December each year) than in many areas, but this is seasonal...south of the equator, tropical cyclones develop in the opposite 6 months (January to June) due to the summer being opposite in the southern hemisphere.
There is no "devil" living in the Bermuda triangle; again, the average of losses in that area are normal, given the density of shipping and air traffic.

The Bermuda Triangle got its name from Vincent Gaddis in August 1964 (this was after the disappearance of the famous Flight 19).
Because it's one of only two places on Earth—the other being an area nicknamed the Devil's Sea off the east coast of Japan, which has a similar mysterious reputation—where true north and magnetic north line up, which could make compass readings dicey, reports of much more "supernatural" occurances began popping up all over the place thereafter (due to disappearing ships).
Long story short, there have been tons of stories about people seeing sea monsters and aliens and whatnot...but it's all a bunch of hooey. As far as actual disappearances go, the fact that a compass gets so thrown off in this area (as well as another area with similiar spooky legends tied to it) it is more likely ships or planes simply get lost.

I agree with Seeker. All this people here claiming methane bubbles are the responsible forgot that the Bermuda Triangle is very famous for taking down boats as well as PLANES. I have traveled from the Unites States to Puerto Rico many times (crossing the triangle each time) and I'm still alive. It's all BS, in my opinion.

devils do not exist. the bermuda triangle is a portal only aliens can use. It has strong magnetic frequencies that kill people if they get trapped inside it. But the waters around it are safe and people have been cured of cancer and other diseases by swimming in them.

no theres sometype of gas released around there that would mess up engines and and hight gages so that the pilots would think they were way to high and do a nose dive to get back on course and hit the water before they could straiten out. you really should watch some national geographic films.

there are these hot geysers under the ground in that specific area. they contain chemicals that can sink a boat easily. these things can reach into the air also. they sink boats, crash plants, and typically make things disappear.
