Peaceful and clean...the central valley: think african plains, with herds of many thousands of tule elk roaming, wolves hunting them like the lions do the herds in Africa. Unspoiled streams teeming with salmon and trout. Grizzly bears free to go where they please. Giant redwoods as far as the eye can see in the foothills of the Sierra and the coast ranges. In short. A paradise.

The central valley was a giant oak forest. There were a lot of trees everywhere actually, before they were chopped down to support the gold rush.
The Native Americans who lived in the Bay Area were the Ohlone, in case you want to look up info about them.

Before the missions, Calfornia used to be filled with Native American tribes. They enjoyed hunting, gathering, and loved to have feasts and "parties" [when possible]. you might want to go to your local library and check out a book about it. It's pretty interesting =]
