Since he uses 40 mm total of suture, he must use 20 mm = 2 cm of thread for every 1 cm of the wound closed . There are 2.54 cm / inch. So 4 inches is 4 x 2.54 cm = 10.16 cm. Since the ratio of suture length used to the length of the incision closed is 2:1, then he must use 2 x 10.16 cm = 20.32 cm of suture.

The answer is 20.32 cm.

It is obvious that the ratio of thread to incision length is 2 to 1 (40 mm for a 20 mm gash).
So, for 4 inch incision, it would require 8 inch of thread, and 1 inch is 2.54 cm.
8 * 2.54 is 20.32 cm. That is your answer.

There are 2.54 cm in an inch, so a 4 inch incision = 4x2.54 = 10.16 cm.

Divide that by 2cm - the amount of wound that is closed by each stitch - and you get 5.08 stitches needed to close the wound.

Since each stitch uses 40mm of thread, multiply 40 times 5.08 stitches to get a total of 203.20 mm of thread needed. Divide that by 10 to convert back to cm - the answer, then, is 20.32cm.

1. Convert 4 inches into centimeters by multiplying by 2.54.
2. Convert 40 mm to cm by dividing by 100. This is how many centimeters of thread used for each stitch.
3. Find out how many stitches it will take to close the incision by dividing the answer to step 1 by 2 cm.
4. Multiply the answer to step 2 by the answer to step 3. Hopefully this will match one of your answer choices!

Good luck!

convert it all to centimeters: 4 in = 10.16 cm and 40 mm= 4 cm.

so do 10.16cm divided by 2cm. that equals 5.08 cm. then multiply that by 4 cm. that comes out to 20.32
