of course it is fine.
i have good friends that don't im me because:
-someone else is on their sn
-company is over
-they are just on to ask someone about homework.
-they don't notice that you are online
-they are working on their profile
-they are doing something else on the computer.

Maybe she or he needs some space! Give it to her or him.
I don't IM any more because I'm so busy! Don't take it personal. Give them a call and find out why!

that is kinda weird; just IM her and see if she does back. if not, ask her what's going on, just don't like freak her out or anything, you know, "so,I tried to IM you, you didn't respond" or "how come you don't IM me when you're on?" she's your BFF, she'll understand that you care
