well for starters it harms your wallet pretty good if your looking tward a pet. they cost alot to start up. aslo depending on species and ITS eperiences in life it could be very aggressive and there could be harm to your fingers, as for bacteria and such washing hands before and after is a simple fix. it is bad simply because your taking the turtle out of the wild. they are arguably rare and play an important role in the ecosystem.

1. Salmonella is a possibility, but easily combated with simple hand washing, etc.

2. Where turtles are, there may be some hazards- mud, snappers, leeches, fishhooks, etc.

3. It might mess up your karma to screw around with wild turtles.

The real issue is the welfare of the turtles. Wild turtles make terrible pets.

If you don't let the turtles go, it hurts the turtles and the environment, which is bad for everyone.

Well, if you do not release the turtles, it's bad for them, because they are removed from their natural habitat. Usually will cause depression & illness in them.

For you, unless you wash your hands thoroughly, you could contract harmful bacterias from the water they live in!
