I need a ladder, but can't work out what length!
If a ladder has an open length of say 5.2m how high up will it go? I understand it should sit 25 degrees from vertical, so there must be a formulae?

1 foot out for every 4 feet up calculate the distance you need to reach divide by 4 subtract from the distance final safe distance is your answer. Ex. 20ft ladder should only be extended to a safe working height of 15ft.

To be placed safely, a ladder should sit 1/4 or 25% of the height of the building and allow 3 feet above the roof. For example, you have a 16ft. ladder (5.2m). You can safely use it on a 12' roof.

Sorry this isn't metric:

Needed Height/ Height with 3' extension above the roof

9-foot max. 16-foot
9 to 13 feet 20-foot
13 to 17 feet 24-foot
17 to 21 feet 28-foot
21 to 25 feet 32-foot
25 to 28 feet 36-foot
28 to 31 feet 40-foot

Have you ever heard of an extension ladder? With an extension ladder you can reach varying heights. Unless your trying to get an answer for your homework.

the easiest way to work out how long a ladder can go is this ..you ALLWAYS leave a minimum of two rungs in the clear in other words you NEVER extend to the last rung ..only as far as the second rung down
