I think Helen Keller or Temple Grandin would be my choice for greatest American. Helen Keller had a difficult life but showed great courage. She set a fine example of somebody overcoming multiple disabilities. Temple Grandin is an autistic author, advocate, and designs cruelity-free livestock handling systems. Here are some links:

George Washington. He fought in the wars he placed soldiers in. I believe in Iraq but have long felt all leaders should get in the ring before the rest. Like that bully murderer Saddam and others that speak tuff and in their neck of the woods manipulate underlings into altering religion to include suicide & murder. Iran's President is another problem. In my opinion we will be there with a draft if we do not vote carefully in "08.
George was all about freedom and rights. He didn't deal with bashing because back then people respected the position as President of these United States.

George Washington. He stepped down after 8 years as president instead of holding on to power. This one of the reasons that the US did not end up with hereditary rulers, but between the Bush's and the Clinton's we may yet.

I think anyone who comes to America and leaves it a better place is the greatest. There is no one American. That's the thing about America, anyone can be a hero.

This is an oppinion question. I don't think there is a "greatest" American. However, I am partial to Susan B. Anthony. She did a great thing by fighting for women's rights.

Simón Bolívar : he liberated almost all of South America.

If, however, by "greatest American" you mean "greatest American from the USA", then it's a toss-up between :

MLK (non-violent civil rights campaign) and FDR (New Deal)

In my opinion, George Washington. He fought and won against a better equipped British military and was our first President. There wouldn't be a United States of America without him.

God Bless.

Ronald Reagan, according to the Discovery Channel in a multi-episode nationwide survey of 75 million people they did two years ago. He beat out everyone else: Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, MLK, everyone.

If you disagree, please direct your complaints to the Discovery Channel. I'm just the reporter.

Since 'greatest' is a value judgement and entirely subjective, your question has no answer. Try being more specific.
