What year, make, and model? Is it a car with front struts? If so, you need a spring compressor. Even the good ones are dangerous and should only be used by qualified mechanics. The cheapies are an accident waiting to happen.
If it is a coil spring without a strut (rear wheel drive car or truck), you may be able to remove it without compressing it. It depends on the year, make, and model.

They make a tool to compress coil springs. They hook on the spring and have a nut on the bottom and when you tighten the nut then the spring compresses, you normally use two of them at a time, one on each side. good luck

This is a dangerous job. Spring compression tools are sold at auto stores.

all good answers , don't forget to wrap a chain through the coil while compressing it , this will absorb some of the energy if the puller slips , then when done, cinch the chain for safe removal . good luck , be safe

Like they've said, buy or rent a spring compressor (auto zone used to lend them out). Do not use an air impact wrench on it, use a ratchet or wrench. Good luck.

Buy yourself a coil spring compressor; not hugely expensive but infinitely cheaper than plastic surgery.............
