Sometimes when you have a theory about something you tend to look for evidence that supports it. Its called a self-serving bias. Try looking for how much everybody else asks for a straw and ignoring how many straws the African Americans ask for.

Also, I've never met anyone that particularly enjoys drinking out of a glass 5 other people have before them. It's kind of gross.

I'm white and I always ask for straws...more often than not, the glass doesn't look as clean as it should be...granted that doesn't make a whole lot of sense since I still drink what's in the class, but I prefer to drink out of a straw when in a restaurant...especially when large ice cubes are in the class because it seems more often than not because of the cubes, I'll end up with what's in the glass down the front of me.

i think it's a good question. it's only observational - i assume that you mean that you have noticed a proportionally higher number of african americans than other racial groups asking for straws, in your experience. whether or not this is true, i don't know.

what i do know is that this is exactly the sort of question that should be asked to get answers to combat racism in the long run. only by asking these questions and having them answered it helps us to understand different cultural and subcultural norms and values.

it is not a racist question, just inquisitive - if maybe a little indelicately phrased!!

I also smirked at the number of "i'm not african american buts....!" it doesn't matter, have your say people!!

enough! can anyone give me an answer please? i'm interested too! is it true or not? if so, why? if not...next!

Less germs on a straw than a glass. I am not African American and I too always ask for a straw.

I am African American. I always ask for a straw and so does everyone else, white etc. God, what is so wrong with that.

Why are you so concerned about what race drinks out of straws? I think you are trying to come off as a racist. If we all do our job instead of looking at what race does what, then we all can live beautiful lives. The straw thing is just another option of getting less germs. Its like me saying," Why do 100% of the white race go tanning to look like African Americans" I'm guessing all races use straws at restaraunts, their homes, at friend houses, and wherever if they feel the need to.

maybe because back in the day, anything touched by african americans was considered dirty, so as a result they tried 2 get rid of that by asking for straws so they could be viewed as civilized and to drink out of a cup with a straw like everyone else

who freaking cares if you drink out of a straw or straight out of the glass.if the glass is dirty and full of germs that means that water or whatever your drinking probably has it too since its in the germ infested glass witch means when you place your straw in the glass full of liquid you will most likely cause those germs to travel up your straw into your mouth and down your throat.here's a question why does everybody worry about drinking out of a straw? don't the forks, spoons and knifes come from the same dish washer and kitchen. aether way black Asian Hispanic or white we are all vulnerable to germs when it comes to going to eat out.

i am caucasian and i always ask for a straw. i guess that it is because the people you wait on are like me and don't like to put their mouth on a spot where someone else has stuck theirs especially when (and i have worked in food service so i know) there can be left over lipstick on the glass
