I know some cultures do all kinds of self mutilation, but how heinous is that? Just like female circumcision in Arabic nations, and they think Americans are crazy.

OMG that is crazy. Kind of like sticking a piece of metal through your tounge or nipples or other body parts. Or letting someone jab you with a needle countless times to draw a picture on your skin that will turn green in a short time. OMG.
Every culture has their own practices.
