Pineapples grow in tropical areas because they like a lot of sun. Pineapple grow in the center of a cactus like plant amidst the plants spiky leaves. They take 18 months to grow!
You can cut off the top of your pineapple and dry out several days. Plant in soil and see if your plant will grow. Pineapples don’t like too much water and warmth so plan accordingly.

LOL, no they don't grow on trees! They grow from a plant that sorta resembles a yucca. the long flat leaves come from a central area at the base. The flower stalk comes out of the middle of the plant with many flowers, but after pollination, the flowers fuse together into one giant fruit. Each of those "bumps" on the outside of the fruit is what is left over from the flower.
If you've ever grown a bromeliad houseplant, a pineapple is a bromeliad.
Below is a picture of a pineapple plantation, other web pixs show the fruit.

The plant looks like a ground palm and the pineapple grows basically on top of the plant like a seed...

Hiya Spike,
Cut the top off of the fruit. Peel most of the leaves off the top, leaving a longish stalk. Leave a few leaves at the top, so that the plant can manufacture food for itself. Plant the stalk in loose, well drained soil. Depending on where you live, it may or may not do well outside in the ground. You may want to cover it loosely with clear plastic - like a mini greenhouse - to get it started.
Hope this helps. :)

They grow on a plant, that is low to the ground. I saw them in Hawaii. Here's a pic.
