OK, here's the thing...I raked a lawn today, and it took me 1 hour to do. I had already done it earlier. Thelady's son was down and said i could rake it if I wanted, just clean up the leaves around the yard and sticks. not alot, but lots of small pieces of leaves around here and there. I filled 1 1/2 10 Gal garbage cans to empty in her woods. when i finished he said, so what do ya wan't? I said just give me $20.bucks I'll be happy. He said, 20! but it only took you 1 hour. He gave me the 20 but made it seem like it was alot more than he planned to pay...I couldn't see raking a lawn for any less.! don't you agree?

The $20 you asked is about the average national (U.S.) rate for un-skilled landscape care. It was a fair price to ask, especially if he solicted you to do the work and you do this type of work for a living.

The odd thing about this is why he didn't discuss a price and terms with you before you did the work. Unless he thought you had already established a price with his mother in the past, he was probably just trying to get away being a cheap and lazy SoB. Unfortunately, there's a lot of those people out there.

I think it depends on the going wages in your area, but generaly, it apears that 20 dollars is pretty reasonable. maybe, they need to see what a yard service would charge, if they find one to do such a small job. some peaple just don't realise what the labor market is worth today. I had a person at one time, want me to shovel snow from his sidewalk and driveway, and only pay me 5.dollars--of course, I flatly turned them down. reach a mutualy agreeable price, before the work is started, I sugjest. community volunteer work is another story, and should be considered by acceptable guidlines.

I agree. You also had your overhead, cost of getting there and time. Don't plumbers have a minimum price of just coming to the door? You do too. $20/hr. You can charge less for subsequent hours if you want, but that initial visit has to pay to get there and home.

Certainly that depends on where you live (what part of the country)... but for the small amount of work you did, regardless of it taking an hour, I'd say $10 is what you would have made around here....
My kitchen trash can is 13 gallons.... That really isn't a lot of leaves/sticks... Not sure why it took an hour...

Nevertheless... You can probably forget them being a repeat customer which means that you've lost much more than you've gained....
