The only way to get Vista free is to steal it, which is both wrong and illegal.

No Windows OSes are free. All free versions are pirated. Which means, if you're caught, MS can and will sue you for theft of Intellectual Property.
Here is why Windows Vista is not advisable for a Home User:
It needs, and requires, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, a Dual Core Processor and a video card with 256 MB DDR2 and the WDDM driver.
Without these basic requirements, Aero and some of the other Hyped features will not work AND you will not get a smooth running system. Period. Even with new machines (Jan 2007 or newer) has trouble running Vista smoothly. It CAN run on 32-bit Processors and less than 1 GB RAM, but it will run clunky and poorly.

It was possible to download a Windowns Vista "release candidate one" version, but this a beta version, so not very stable. Can't be sure that it can still be downloaded, but my husband downloaded a copy some months back before Vista was fully released. It was free and legal, but being a beta version means there's still problems associated. We've got it installed on a spare PC - nothing other than Vista on it, seems to work, and it's not a new PC, with high spec, however hasn't been played with much...was all a bit of an experiment, to learn about it.

From all that I've heard, it's not worth it, even for free. Stick with xp, which in my opinion is the best of all window models.
