she (my indian mother) thinks marriage is something that should be arranged and sooner the better. I am 21 and live in the uk (she lives in india) and i just want to meet the right person at the right time - any advice on what to do?

I say talk to ur mom and tell her that u r just not ready. She can't force u to marry someone u will not be happy with or have feelings for. That comes naturally, u know who's right for u when the time comes. Let her know that ur not on the same beliefs as her, tell her u will only end up hurting a guy whom ur not in love with. Why play with people's emotions when they don't desrve it. Trust me it hurts. Be honest to ur mom and ask her to please accept your values, tell her that when ur ready u will let her know. She might take it well or she might not, but make her understand you've grown to be your own person with your own thoughts. I'm sure everything will go well. My parents tried doing the same with me but no matter how many times I told them they didn't understand, so I got married with my real boyfriend, rushed into things, and it's not what I expected. I love my husband but I feel we rushed into things. Had my parents never went looking for a husband for me, I probably would not be married and maybe I probably would not have ended up with my husband. See we both hurt eachother cause' drastic measures had to be taken so my parents wouldn't marry me off. Tell ur mom and if she gets mad give her some time to think about things over. I'm sure she will think about what u say.

While it's ok to listen to the wisdom to an older generation, sounds like she wants you to do something that is not right for you. If I were you, I'd stand your ground on this one until you meet the right person. It's better to be happy with your life and happy with your choices than follow a tradition that doesn't mean so much to you. Good luck!

I think you are old enough to tell your mother that you will live your own life and that she is not going to control it. I understand in India the whole pre-arranged crap I think you should find real love not some Mr. Fix-up by your parents and his parents!.

arranged marriages actually have a lower rate of divorces for some reason. Maybe because we pick mates with our hormones and parents pick with their brains? With that being said, hell no you shouldn't marry him, come to the states and live with me in sin I think Indian women are sexy beyond sexy, i watch Bollywood and weep to know Indian women seldom date outside their culture.
