If you have myspace, you can draw portraits of friends you have with many contacts. The more popular/ more contacts they have, the more exposure you get. Or, try to make a video of yourself drawing someone cool on YouTube. If you're really good then the video might circulate around real quick. Mention in the video that you are accepting requests to draw their portraits for a fee. Set up an online site to display your work, and remember to ask as much friends (preferably one with many contacts) as you can to display artwork of them on myspace attached with your website's link. You can also try to get your site in Google and get it as high up the list as possible. The way to do this is to get a lot of people to link to your site. It's all about connection. Youtube and Myspace is the media of the moment, everyone checks them out so it's the best way to get an audience. Good luck!

Use portraits of the famous people you listed, have them framed, take them down to art galleries, get known... it's a long process, you probably won't make crap loads of money right away.
However, you can also sell framed pictures of famous people. Have a pile of business cards beside these pictures, advertising your talents (or at least a little burble [poster])
Mingle with other artists. Also, when you can afford it, get some posters done and post them in public areas... Join community presentation groups, find out where other artists hang out. You can usually find community presentation groups in public gatherings such as festivals, celebrations, parades, special day celebrations, etc.
Hey, people love artists, just get out there and get known. However, artists do struggle in the beginning, until they get known... As you're getting known, you can't be cheap! You can even sit in a park with other artists, sketching people, for beans sometimes... But be cheerful, be talkative, let them "remember you".
Networking! That's what it is. Get out there and get known. :-) They'll remember you, because you're friendly. Simple ads are too cold. You want them to "know you", not just your work. People often don't want anything to do with a rude artist.
Oh yeah, what the first guy said too. Make a website. Put the link on your business cards. Make the business cards yourself and be creative and colorful.
That's just the beginning... as you get known, you can do various other things... Bigger ads!!
It's loads of fun really. Enjoy!!
Have fun and good luck!

Here are some of the things i started doing once i felt i was ready. I put together a porfolio to carry around and show people, i posted my artwork on a site (hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro'') and created some business cards with the site name on them. The first time i showed my porfolio i was commissioned to do a job and have had several since. I'd say the hardest thing for any artist to do, is establish a repor with potential clients and assure them that you can do the job. Most artist have a hard time talking to people about what they do and what they charge, but the more you do it the easier it gets. I'm currently working on a painting i have been commissioned to do by a client of mine for a friend of his (somone that runs and operates a gallery workshop), a potentially helpfull contact? Maybe? Well that's how i do it and it is starting to work out pretty good, but it's taken alot of work. Realisticly, before you see any serious money, one has to pay their dues and only those that stick it out and do the work, stand a chance.

Below are some of the best web sites to promote portrait painting on. You may want to first train at an Atelier art school such as Dana Levin's The New School of Classical Art. Learing classical techniques for realism drawing and painting is the foundation of a great portrait artist.

Put an ad in your local newspaper once in a while. Also have some nice business cards made and pass them out. Some stores will let you leave a stack of them at their check out line. Frame shops, art supply stores, restaurants, and so on. Sometimes you can get banks to let you set up a nice display of your drawings in their lobby. I see photographers and artists around here do that all the time. The bank gives them a week or two and then they set it up again in a different bank.
