I umpired a game and this happened. My partner and I said it was a hit batter and we put him on first. The coach of the pitching team sait it would be a ball and when we said he wasn't right he blew up in our face. Who was right?

First, this question was resolved just the other day. Check the archives next time.

Second, if you're going to umpire a game, read the rules beforehand. It will help you immensely.

Third, the answer: The ball is dead and the batter is awarded first base, as long as the batter tried to avoid being hit and he didn't swing.

even if it hits the ground first its considered a hit-batsman. It it crosses the plate and the batter hits the ball after it hits the ground and its fair its an inplay ball. Vlad Guerreo hit a homer on a ball that bounced before it crossed the plate

You made the right call, and the major league rules cover it under 6.08 B. There is no exception made for a ball that first bounces, so the coach is wrong.
