The abomination of slave trade went against European ethics and morals and defied Christian teachings on brotherly love etc. So, surely defying so much of the values that Europe stood for must have done harm to the European culture.

No the slaves did!!!
Most of Europe did not class the slaves as human beings.
They were treated much the same as farm animals, or beasts
of burden. I really don't think that that it was seen as a moral issue at that time.

Yeah this years a bit of back tracker alright.

I suspect the slave trade quite dramatically changed Europe when it was introduced, and again when it was abolished.

I dont think Europeans look back on things in quite the same way as people who question historical processes.

It, (the slave trade) had a beginning a middle and an end.

Of course not!
Most of the ships that transported slaves were European, most of the plantations we owed by Europeans, most of the people that had slaves were Europeans. Ha! Do you mean ethically? Yeh! We became less Christian, but that's a good thing. Many of the plantations were owed by the Catholic Church. Where was their Christian values when they were making huge profits to build even more grandiose temples to the God whose teaching they failed to observe.

Do some research. Europe was involved with the African slave market.

Slavery has been around since history began.
