666, The Number of the Beast
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
Note that according to verse 17, there are three different characteristics that distinguish the beast:
his mark (of authority)
his name
the number of his name (666).
It might be argued by some that 666 must be applied to one man's name, and that this will then help identify him as the antichrist. I would offer the following verse to show that 666 need not apply solely to a man's name:
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
The same Greek word translated as name (onoma: G3686) that appears in Revelation 13:17-18 is also used in chapter 19:16, so clearly the word can also apply to a title, and not just one man's name. Now, we are told that it takes a certain understanding and wisdom to discern just how this number is actually applied. Based on the fact that 666 can apply to a title, below are several words and phrases that have been put forth over the centuries as probable solutions to the enigma of 666.
GREEK
The numeric equivalents of Greek letters can also be found in the Encyclopedia Britannica under "Languages of the World", Table 8.
The ancient Greek word for "the Latin speaking man" is LATEINOS
L = 30 lambda
A = 1 alpha
T = 300 tau
E = 5 epsilon
I = 10 iota
N = 50 nu
O = 70 omicron
S = 200 sigma
------------
666
NOTE: Latin is the official language of the Roman Catholic Church. Church Documents are usually published first in Latin, and then translated from the Latin into other languages. The association of "Lateinos" with 666 was first suggested by Irenæus (ca. 130-202 A.D.) who proposed in his Against Heresies that it might be the name of the fourth kingdom in Daniel 7:7.
Then also Lateinos has the number six hundred and sixty-six; and it is a very probable [solution], this being the name of the last kingdom [of the four seen by Daniel]. For the Latins are they who at present bear rule: I will not, however, make any boast over this [coincidence].

Okay, this is going to take a while.
Okay, 7 is the perfect number right?
Thus 777 is the most perfect number.
Meaning 666 is the number of imperfection.
Hence the number of man, thus implying the Beast is going to be a man, possibly with powers.
Also, Adolf Hit.ler's number (dont know which one - sorry) was 555, thus signifying the Beast is 111 "evil points" worse than .
I havent heard that song... Its Iron Maiden isnt it?

Alleister Crowley claimed that title for his own in the seminal days of the Golden Dawn.
666 is only mention outright once and that is in revelations, which is a quite iffy prophesy in the first place. However, it was needed to put fear into the peasents so they would convert.
Here is the quote:
13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count
the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his
number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.
Why threescore is used instead of sixty is something of a mystery. Especially since the Biblical languages all had words for the tens (decades.) and score is an English word with its earliest written usages being the 13th century.

The number comes from the passage:
Revelation 13:18
"This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666."
There are actually lots of songs titled "666" - maybe people are making a political statement, maybe they're just trying to be scary. :P

The Number of the Beast is described in the Book of Revelation 13:18. From the King James translation:[5]
“ Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. ”
In the Greek manuscripts, the Number is rendered in Greek numerical form as “χξς”,[6] or sometimes literally as “six hundred and sixty-six”, “ἑξακόσιa εξήντα εξι”.[7][8] [hexakosioi hexékonta hex - lit. sixhundred sixty six]
The oldest known record of the verse, a fragment of an early manuscript of Revelation from the Oxyrhynchus site, gives a different number, 616, as “χιϛ”.[1] The early Church father Irenaeus knew several occurrences of the 616-variant but regarded them as a scribal error, although he didn't know the meaning of the number.[9] The Zürich Bible which is based on the oldest Bible manuscripts also mentions the number 616.
666 can also refer to a Roman Emperor such as Nero.[10]

[edit] 666 in the Old Testament
The number 666 appears several times in the Old Testament, including in 1 Kings 10:14-22 as the number of talents of gold received by King Solomon in one year. "Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold" [1]
Scholars such as Dr. Aitken have speculated that the reference to this passage was a way of speaking in code about then contemporary figures about whom it would have been politically dangerous to criticize openly.
According to the Bible, Solomon fell into apostasy and built altars to Chemosh, Moloch, and Ashtoreth, pagan gods to whom human sacrifices were made. (See 1 Kings 11:4-8.) In his book "Secrets of the Freemasons", author Michael Bradley notes that the hexagram is known in Masonry as the Seal of Solomon: "...the hexagram is widely associated with the occult, and it is considered the most powerful of Satan's symbols, containing '666.' Occultists call it the 'trud' and use it in necromantic ceremonies to summon evil spirits."

Because 666 in numerology was the numbers in the name Nero(emperor of Rome in jesus's time).He is in fact the devil,as the jesus teachings where meant to lead revolt against Rome and free the Jews.Nero was the christian devil and 666 was how you could express that without the Romans knowing.

Well the number 7 is seen as "perfect" because it's symmetrical....so 6 is an imperfect number. Or at least so I've been told. I don't really understand why. I guess we'll find out soon enough...
