It's really up to you. Both have pros and cons, but both are perfectly acceptable for inital jewlery.

Technically, the ring is better because it is easier to clean after getting your belly button pierced. However, it may get snagged on to clothes. On the other hand, the bar isn't much harder to clean it just might take 2 seconds more than if you had the ring. And the bar looks more appealing than the ring as well.

I used to work in a shop that done piercings and I actual helped the piercer.
I strongly suggest you don't try to do it yourself because your belly button is very easily irritated and can become infected.
if you are going somewhere to get it done by a professional then they will use a curved ring or solid ring.
a straight bar is not a great idea because it would be very uncomfortable especially while sitting and it would be hard to heal.

bar because a ring has 2 be angled wen piercing. but once its healed u can easily put a ring in if u wish.

I think bars look a hell of a lot better. Rings look stupid.
