Go to the wireless settings for your router and password protect your wireless connection. You can also restrict connections by the IP address of the PC. This will only allow specific IP addresses to connect. so if someone does manage to crack your password, they will still be restricted by the IP address...doesn't hurt to be too careful these days ;)
Good Luck :)

All answers are great but not to the point. To set a network key (password) on ur router, u need to log into ur router and change the settings. Open Internet Explorer/Firefox and type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and press enter. U will be asked to enter loginname and password. Enter "admin" as login name and "password" as password. Password can also be "admin" or "12345". All these above details are mentioned in the router manual/guide. Once you logged in, click on Wireless Settings, check WPA-PSK box and enter any password that u can remember easily. Click on Update and log out of ur router. That's it. Now everyone who wants to use ur wireless network will have to enter that network key (including you). Without it, they can't connect to your router. WEP key can be easily cracked, that's y i suggested u to create WPA-PSK key. All the best!!

buy a wireless product with built-in firewall
[have a up-to-date firewall on your computer anyway]
change your wireless channel from the default setting
use a WPA-PSK or higher password set-up
untick the box for "broadcasting" your wireless network
always turn off the wireless when your not using it
when choosing your network name - try using something that can't identify YOU by neighbours etc > eg. dont use something like your name, address, etc
hope this helps

This probably doesn't have anything to do with people "tapping" into your network, but rather wireless interference. You don't by chance have 2.4 GHz phones do you? These can cause flaky wireless connections, because they can overlap the wireless signals. 5.8GHz or 900MHz phones will not cause interference.
