Because if it wasn't we'd probably still be in the stone age by now. Perhaps we'd still be monkeys?

What I mean is that although this saying has 'negative' implications; if humans weren't attracted by... more attractive things, we'd have just made do with what we had and wouldn't have made any progress.

Sometimes the grass is truly greener and sometimes it's not, the person who can differentiate can truly go far.

Then again it can be said that the 'journey' to the other side was the more important that the 'greenness' of the grass, that the grass was just a grassy bonus.

Ok - I'm going to stop now, sorry if I've made little sense.

this expression just means that to the human brain, they will perceive that the grass is greener (read: better) on the other side of the fence, even if it is the same.

This statement is meant to suggest that humans are inherently insatiable. That they are never satisfied with what they have, and that no matter what they have, they will always believe that it is better elsewhere.

because it gives everyone hope whether it be in their lives (or their grass) that theres always something better that can be achieved...only if you're willing to aim for it.
