Read some Engle from that time period -- the factory conditions were awful. I can only imagine working in a cotton factory (from the book North and South, for instance), and how awful it would be to constantly breathe in the particles. There were so many air quality problems that people often thought they had tuberculosis when they didn't have it at all.
But - your question is open to all economic levels. So, depending on your status, I would guess that the situation would vary.

Very smoky in UK as everyone had domestic coal fires.

Overcrowding and mal nourishment for the poor.
