i just want to know how many people agree with me......i think that when babies are born addicted to any drug, be it alcohol, pot, pills, heroin or anything that the child should be automatically taken away from the mother and the mother should be charged with attempted murder, or at the least child abuse because both of those is what it is. If the mother doesn't care enough to take care of a baby while it is inside of her then what makes anyone think she will be fit to take care of a child at any age . They should first check to see if the father is in the picture and make srue he is fit to have the child and if not put it in states custody or up for adoption. There is no excuse for any child to be born into this world addicted to drugs. This world is hard enough a baby should not have to go through withdrawls , that is terrible. anyway, i wanted to know how many of you agree with me and if you don't i would like you to explain why.

They do take the babies away.
My cousin has FAS [fetal alcohol syndrome]. He is currently in my care/custody. When he was born he was automatically given to my aunt [his grandmother] because of the neglect/abuse.
My cousin [she's my first cousin] was not charged with anything but I feel they should charge these people. Why? Because like you said it is attempted murder or at least abuse.
My cousin's life isn't horrible but he'll never be "the same" as the other kids because of her stupid decision. I'm not for abortion but the option was there and he'd never have such a rough road ahead.
He's a blessing but his mother....uggh words can't even explain. Good question!
---EDIT---
For all of those people who say that we have no clue what addiction is like. Give me a break! That's just an excuse.
Women choose to do drugs! Women choose to have sex! What happens when you do drugs and have sex? You risk getting addicted and pregnant. These are choices these women are making.
How hard is it to check yourself into a clinic? Not very hard!
These women are SELFISH! It's not even a little pot that messes up a child or a little alcohol--it's excessive and daily. They make the choice to do drugs just like a murderer makes the choice to kill. When you do that you have to pay for the concequences. Hopefully, if they served hard time they'd break the addiction before becoming pregnant again.

I agree that the baby should be taken away at least until the mother has been clean for a certain amount of time, but to charge her with attempted murder would be going overboard. Addicts have a hard time getting clean even if they want to. I doubt most addicts are trying to kill their baby. But if the baby tests positive for drugs, then it is taken away anyway.

you make a point.....i dont think it should be something as serious as attempted murder. im guessing that you've never been on drugs....having an addiction is a diease...it takes over your mind and your body im not making excuses for women who use while pregnet but sometimes people are not strong willed enough to put the stuff down even if they are pregnet and its really hard to quit pregnet or not.
i do believe that women who use and have babys should be forced my law to have their tubes tied....if in years they can prove to be clean then they can be reversed....my childhood friend has 3 kids.... 2 out of those 3 were born addicted....i see them struggle to keep up with my kids who are younger then they are...its really sad i asked her once what was so hard about not using while she was pregnet....in her case she said she was staying so high all day every day that she didnt even know she was pregnet...by the time she knew the damage was done...
i dont know just my thoughts.

You are right on the money; however, there are moms who were addicts early in the pregnancy, and then sought treatment before delivery. Even though it is horrific, a mother should be given a chance to get clean before the baby is taken for good. The effects of here addiction(s) will be with her forever because her child will have life long problems.

If a baby is born addicted to drugs, the mother shouldn't be able to keep it until she kicks her addiction. If she's on drugs, how could she ever care for her baby? But-how can you charge her with attempted murder when abortion is still legal? That's like saying the life of the child only matters if it's wanted. I don't agree with abortion or with drug-addicted moms, but you can't say that a drug-addicted mom is guilty of attempted murder but a non-addicted mom can have her baby terminated because she doesn't want it. I hope this makes sense, it does in my head.

They do take the babies away, they leave in the care of a foster parent. The parents can get the baby if they complete drug rehab and and have clean urine tests for a long time. I work with many drug exposed infant and the poor babies have so many issues because of exposure to drugs.

I agree, But they would only take the baby away, If something happened after giving birth and they did a blood test and found stuff the mother would be charged. But If everything comes out fine and the mother still used then they take them home. that is my understandings.

i see your point to a certain degree. you've obviously never been addicted to drugs. im not making excuses, but an addiction is a disease. it takes over your mind and body. i know this because my mother used herion for over 20 years and there's 4 of us kids. she always tried to stop and in the end, lost. we are very lucky that we dont have any major health problems. my little sister was born premature, but she's fine now. it's easy for people to judge when they've never been there themselves. i love my mom and i know that she wasn't trying to hurt us.

You make a very good point and unless it wasnt her doing ,like someone gave her drugs or alcohol and she didnt know, then yes they should take it away, for child endangerment
