I've tried to open and play it on wmp and real player but it says the file is not supported...do I have to download a codec or something? if so where do I get the right one from and how do I use it to play the movie?

yep vlc media player its the one ! . down load it its free plays just about anythink goin

This might seem stupid to ask but...

What was the file format and what have you done with it?

I ask this because the vast majority of movie downloads on bittorrent are dvd image files (or the files needed to create one). Use programs like nero or ultraiso to create the image, grab a blank dvd, and used your fave burning tool to create the disc.

If it was a raw movie file then as said before, you may need to install codecs to get it to run. Most common is divx.

The majority of videos posted by torrent sites are encoded with the Divx codec and require you to play it with the Divx Player.

VLCPlayer, will play almost anything with out the need to download extra codecs ect.. just do a search for it

Sidious is right look on the site you downloaded from and you will get cucusoft avi to dvd converter or I think the best one is VSO converting software

well depend what file format it is you may need a converter as you can download look for a suitable converter on the site you use
