Depends on your taste, what you like to read. Fiction or non fiction?
If you like non-fiction, then perhaps you can try "the secret by Rhonda Byrne"
The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a really great book as well.
If you want to try popular authors, you can try something by stephen king (carrie, pet cemetary), John Grisham (the firm, runaway jury) Sidney Sheldon (if tomorrow comes, master of the game) Danielle Steel (she has too many)
The Harry potter series is there as well, so really, its about your taste, what you like to read.
A good suggestion is to check out the new york times bestseller list, or even amazon. com and you'll get some great selections.

Any books that are put out by my favorite author Ted Dekker are awesome and I'd recommand them to anyone who's a reader like me. Once you read them your hooked. They are filled with adventure and a little bit of romance but not a lot and they are fiction but awesome. Check one out and see for yourself.
