It's not wrong to own an exotic pet. However, it is wrong to get an exotic pet (or any pet) without knowing what you're getting into.
It isn't fair to your pet when you decide that it was more work than you thought and try to get rid of it. It's bad enough that people take their dogs and cats to the shelter but it's a big problem when they just let their alligator go in a local park because it got too big.
I have no problem with intelligent people making a decision to own an exotic pet. I have a problem with the people who don't think the decision through and don't do their homework. I'd also like to point out a point that you've missed on the wrong side of the argument: buying exotic pets often fuels the illegal pet trade. It's dangerous and cruel to the animals and ruins the ecology of their natural environment. If you do get an exotic pet, make sure it's from a reputable breeder.

E Minor - Thumbs up for you. It looks like you left a couple of things out, but yeah, that was my basic thought. To answer the question: As an example of what you are talking about there are a couple of pet store in and around Chicago (big city where I live) that have foxes, monkeys, and other exotics, but they are for display only (not for sale). They use them to draw in customers to sell "exotic" reptiles, birds, etc. What you are talking about is not a "brick and mortar" store (real store someone can walk into). It's an online store. There are lots of those already where anyone can buy foxes, skunks, servals, opposum, and wolf hybrids. Asian leopard cats and pure wolves need a zoo/professional license almost everywhere, so you can only get them without license off of an international seller site like alibaba (and good luck importing them to the US or Europe after you already paid for them if you don't have a zoo license). I have never seen genets or capybara sold online, so that would be an interesting thing you could do (capybara would maybe be a good pet like a potbelly pig?). So really what you need to do first is decide if you want to be more of a dealer that sells to licensed zoos or more of a pet store that sells to the unlicensed public. You can do both, but most people would specialize and only do 1 or the other. ***The second thing you need to do is research local, state, and national laws to see which animals require a license to buy so you know which animals you can sell to which people.*** Then you need to start the company legally, get whatever licenses you need, and buy a bunch of inventory animals and supplies to care for them until they're sold (unless you become a broker and don't keep them with you). Honestly, the more I think about it, it's kind of a screwy business plan to have an actual store. You'll go broke caring for them properly before sale because there's little demand. If you cut corners you'll get shut down. I would do it as a broker and advertise heavily online (try Florida - they love exotics) or become a zookeeper instead if you like caring for them.

Personally, I think exotic animals should only be owned by people who can take proper care of them and give them proper living conditions., and that people wanting to own exotics should have to get a license or permit. I owned California desert tortoises when I lived in California -- they had been in captivity for over 60 years and were passed along to me by another owner -- and I had to get a state permit to do so.
(The tortoises were not exotics, they were a protected native species.)
I think that in many cases the desire to own an exotic animal is an ego thing.

it depends on what you consider "exotic". we have a rabbit and vets consider him exotic. parrots are, too. there are many exotic animals that can be kept safely as pets. if you mean big cats or other animals that are not traditionally domesticated, then yes it's wrong. they need to be in a natural habitat. this question is too complex for a yes or no answer.

I think its right if you know what your getting yourself into..
also "exotic" covers alot of animals...
I am owned by a raccoon... will I ever purchase another? NO!
but ... I am responsible for what I tame...
also.. its very sad these people who purchase exotics.. to find out how hard it is to care for them.. and how destructive these wild animals can be.. and they rid them..
too often these animals come to me.. ( wildlife rehabilitator)
where I in turn... wild them up and release them.. as they totally hate my guts... only friendly to their "mommie"
I also have a pet skunk. Her owner didnt want her anymore.. and she is the sweetest thing.
also... a Coatimundi... his owner didnt want him either.. after 6 months.. they are all happy here.. and I am more than willing to make their life happy... NO ONE is caged.. period.
and they all are happy.. but I dont know of many that would make that sacrifice.

If a person is educated on what exotic they want, then it not so bad. But it bad for an ignorant person to own them because the humans inflict terrible faits on animals. I have spent almost all of my finances and time rescuing exotics, rehabilatating them, and educating potential owners about them. Humans were meant to live with animals, not destroy them. Also, here is a quote I picked up .>>>> "If you tame me, we shal need eachother. To me you willbe unique in all the world. To you I will be unique in all the world. You will become responsible forever for what you have tamed."

I believe as long as the owner is educated on the particular animal its ok. We have a blue and gold Macaw, she is amazing. But there are so many people who have these animals that just dont take proper care of them.
