I have a lilac tree branch cutting, do I need to use rooting hormone or can I just put it in water to root?

Lilac bushes are usually grown on privet rootstock. I am not sure how well it would root on its own, no matter what you put on it.

I would use a rooting hormone, they can be started in water also, but the rooting hormone is a better way to go.
