You can use your current passport until it expires.

I dont know where you are form but i can tell you about the the EU passports and yes.. you do need a new type of passport to enter the usa without a visa... the optical passport. You can still use the old one but you need to go to the embassy for a visa

It is the same passport, we just have to use it to come and go from Canada and Mexico now.
