hi baby blue! ok, it sounds like ur music library was transferred to ur new laptop, but ur laptop's itunes is not recognizing the songs - if ur laptop's itunes was recognizing ur songs then the songs on ur ipod would not have been deleted. i think u have a couple options.

OPTION 1: plug ur ipod back into ur desktop and resync so u get all ur songs back, then do the following to set up ur ipod to manage music manually (do this on ur desktop first, then do this on ur laptop):

1. open itunes then plug ur ipod into ur computer. ** if itunes automatically starts the sync/update, CANCEL IMMEDIATELY by clicking the "x" symbol at the top of the itunes window (right next to where the "updating ipod. do not disconnect" message appears) **

2. when u plug ur ipod into ur computer, itunes displays a screen - on the Summary tab of this screen, check the box next to "manage music and videos manually".

OPTION 2: (u may have to do this anyway) make sure ur laptop's itunes knows where ur music library folder is:

1. open itunes
2. click the "edit" menu, then "preferences" then the "advanced tab" then the "general" tab.
3. click the "change" button and locate ur music library on ur laptop that u copied from ur desktop - the folder will probably be named "iTunes Music"
4. click the "ok" button and ur laptop's itunes should now have all ur songs in the library!

once u get ur itunes/ipod set up on ur new laptop, please please subscribe to my FREE video podcast on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=183309259

first of all... the person above me said it best on how to get your music back on your ipod

here is an alternative to how you store your music.

the ingenius thing Mac did with itunes is make it so that an ipod can have only one "home" itunes.

which disables you from dl'ing from your friends itunes/ will delete your files if not at "home"(if you tell it to that is)

just use a jump drive or some sort of external storage device(if your not on a network) and then transfer your music files by transferring the itunes music folder. it worked for a couple of albums i had.

i personally store all my songs in mp3 format then itunes will convert and create a .aac file of the song giving me two copies in different formats but having a backup plan if my itunes/ lappy dies. (i use an external to store the mp3 files)

This kind of thing has happened to me before. You may have your iPod set to autofill. Ipods can only use the option autofill with one computer at a time. Since you plugged the ipod into a new computer, it deleted all of the songs because it wanted to replace the current songs with the new ones. You will have to set your ipod to manually manage music if you want to use it with multiple comuters without repeatedly deleting your music. To do this, when you plug your ipod in their should be a choice at the top of the music tabbed section that says manually manage or autofill, and you have to clic manually. The only problem is that you will have to drag and drop all of your music later.
