We'd be worse off without it.

I will gladly admit that I have little scientific and literature reference for my answer. I can't back up any of this.
My understanding is that nuclear energy is most likely the most efficient source of energy available on this planet. Try running cities like Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, and Seoul on our smiling friendly sun or hydroelectric thing-a-ma-jigs. Organizations like Green Peace have ruined everything. We are now convinced that every nuclear power plant is a bomb waiting to annihilate us all. Yes, some tragedies like Chernobyl have occurred. Perhaps we moved a little too fast and constructed operating facilities without knowing enough. Unfortunately that will be the case with every advancement in technology through eternity. The misunderstood and likely misinformed stigma regarding nuclear energy has set us years behind. Yes there is waste from the processing of energy. I'm pretty sure a reasonable solution for dealing with the waste could have been reached. Stash it on Mars. Nobody seems to be living there.
Sorry folks. You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. An estimated 1.17 million automobile deaths occur worldwide every year*. That's a lot of dead people. I don't see anybody working on more efficient and safe forms of travel. What has been our solution? Make automobiles more safe. I'm too lazy to find the numbers but our safer cars seem to be killing more people than ever.

It's a necessary evil. As long as we want light bulbs to light up for cheaper than five bucks an hour it's going to be around.
Chernobyl is still burning and caused alot of deaths, alot of cancers with the fallout that went into the waters that the nordic country's are drinking. The cap they plugged the hole up with is deteriorating quicker than anticipated so there are more problems ahead. If we get problems from one of our plants, it's going to be our own fault, but until then, party on.

I don't know a whole lot about domestic power, but they say it is safe and several countries use that form of power.
I really wouldn't like living next to a reactor though.
