The balls are pitched (bowled) at an average of 15 MPH slower than a baseball is pitched. Do they not have very good control of the ball or something?

Haha. They get a running start and still can't throw as fast as MLB pitchers.

In cricket the ball usually bounces off the ground, so it can be very unpredictable where it will go. Ever seen a baseball pitcher throw 'wild' pitch that bounces off the ground and gives the batter and catcher hard time? That's nearly every pitch in cricket. With a ball that's much heavier than a baseball and up to 300 balls (pitches) per game you've GOT to protect yourself.

Edit: Make that 300 balls per game.

baseball suc*s.. there is no wicket to bowl at..
& by the way why the guy behind the base needs to protect his face..

if u ever played cricket then u could not ask the question..
when a fast ball comes near -legs starts shaking.. and if it bounces it will hit u in the head..
15 mph is wrong around 90 mph is right
raman lamba (fielding) of india died on the groung playing cricket ,when ball hit his head

Since cricket ball is very hard, if it hits on the legs or hands it is not only very painful, but also result in fracture. To avoid that the pads are being worn by the batsmen.

*15MPH is grossly wrong. The average fast bowler goes abt 85MPH, and the really quick ones go over 90.
*A batsman will face more balls than a baseball player in an innings...thus the need for protection.
*Cricket balls are much harder than baseballs.

the ball is aimed at the wickets and the batsmen is pretty much in front of them, plus the ball is harder than a baseball so it can pretty much break your bones. You also wear a 'box' to protect your package, I got hit there once , and i had a box . It hurt beyond belief.

To protect their knees and shins should the ball hit them. The ball is made of a very hard material and is coming at the bats man at a high rate of speed. It coud be potentially painful.

as in baseball, not every ball is aimed at the body, but in cricket, most balls are aimed at the bat, so the legs need protection
