Excellent question! I have a neighbor that called the authorities on me because he said my rabbits brought rats to the neighborhood... When the animal control people showed up, they found out he was feeding the birds and it was the birdseed that was all over the ground that was attracting the rodents.
He couldn't believe it... he put out BIRD seed... only birds eat BIRD seed! My rabbits are clean, healthy, (vet checked) and well cared for,,, with no signs of rodents! But he still didn't believe it... People have preconcieved ideas of what animals eat and how they behave... and sometimes nothing will change their minds. It's not the animals that have problems... it's the people.

My mom doesn't mind all the other kinds of birds, but the squirrels. They eat a whole feeder full of food in about an hour!!! She gets so mad. I really can't blame her, it seems like she's always filling the feeders, because of the squirrels

I suppose it's because they want to specifically feed the birds - so they can bird-watch. But yes, you have to take extreme measures if you want to prevent other animals from eating food set out for birds. I think setting out several kinds and types of food in different types of feeders take care of everything. :-)
