Any one of these will work as spot treatments, if the dirt that's caked-in is bad and all over the carpet I would not suggest trying to shampoo the carpet you are just going to pull all that dirt to the surface of the fibers. I would first sweep your carpet to "fluff up" the fibers, then vacuum two or three times in different directions to pull out as much of the dirt as possible. Then spot treat the areas that are bad. If you are brave and can afford it you might either rent or buy a steam cleaner, not a shampooer. If you get a steam cleaner your carpets will be dry in 2 hours or so and you could go back over the main traffic areas again. But definitely sweep and vacuum really well first!!!
Oh and be sure to do the spot treatment's before you steam clean.
Canada Dry Club Soda, pour directly onto stain, blot with a paper towel
One cup of Tide with two cups of White Vinegar. Scrub the stain with this solution, rinse with cold water, blot and air dry.
Sprinkle the stain with Baking Soda, scrub gently with a wet scrub brush.
***Sugar Paste, made of sugar and water, and allowed to sit for one hour, will usually remove anything else*** This one always works the best!!

Definitely don't spend the extra money getting pro's in to do it. I get the rug doctor steam cleaner from the A&P supermarket for about $20 for 24 hours plus the cleaning solution, and you just pre-treat the stains with that, or use oxi-clean if you have it on hand, getting the worst of them out.
Them you steam clean and it's very easy to do, and the rugs will look a million times better. All in all you can clean it for $25-$30, if you got professional'a in, it'll cost a few hundred, then getting your deposit back won't mean as much to you:)

I'd call Stanley Steemer or ServiceMaster and have them do it. But schedule it the day before you move out. That way the room will be empty-ish and by the time the landlord does the walk-through, the stains shouldn't have resurfaced yet. Plus they know how to treat stains. It only cost me $110 to get a $1100 deposit back.

Chef girl has the right answer for you. I'm a landlord and I just paid to have carpets cleaned in an empty apartment. They charged me $105, but all carpets look great. Just don't walk on them anymore than necessary until the landlord has done a walk through.

definitely let the professionals do it since you have left the stains for so long to get ground in. have them come in after you have all your stuff out of the apartment and schedule your final walk through while the carpets are still a little damp. in the next place get a spot treatment to apply immediately so you dont have this issue again.

If you don't want to call in the professionals I would rent a carpet cleaner and do it myself...good luck......:)
