For a science project we are not allowed to use real acid because it is too dangerous. Do you know any substitutes for real hydrchloric acid?

I have to voice my opinion and say that is pointless. It science, you should be able to use anything science related if you need to. As long as you aren't pouring hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid on eachother, you should be allowed to use it.

You're not going to be able to find anything that will substitute for the power of hydrochloric acid.

Any other strong acid is just as dangerous as hydrochloric acid, some even more so. You will have to see if you can do your project using a weak acid like vinegar. It will produce the same effects as a strong acid, just much more slowly.

Depends entirely on what you are trying to do. You may be able to use household acids such as vinegar or lemon juice, but these may not be acidic enough. Borax is found in most general stores, so I'm not sure why you would need a substitute for this. A little more info please.

HCl is highly corrosive, its not just its extremely low pH that makes it so dangerous. Especially if children are going to be using it. If you are doing acid-base chemistry then pick something around the house that has a low pH like that of lemon juice ~pH3 or vinegar~pH4. However, if these chemicals are spilled just like HCl and left on the skin, slowly they can do damage.

vinegar is a weak acid and is used in high school chem labs all the time because it is a lot safer than using stronger acids
