Cats are solitary animals -- descended from desert animals who form small prides of a few members (like lions) or NONE at all (like tigers, I believe, and cheetahs).

Dogs are pack members (like wolves) who have an Alpha Dog in the pack, and the other dogs are submissive to the Apha Dog.

Dunno why they like us humans but I'm very glad they do!!!

Actually, it has to do with the way they were domesticated thousands of years ago. Cats were good to have around the granaries in the old days - they ate the fat grain-fed mice (yum), which were safer to eat back then becuz the mice today have all kinds of poisons and diseases in their systems, and dogs helped hunt, and protect, in the old days. Then they became companions, friends and four-legged family members.

There are some ancient (5000 year sold) Sumerian poems that describe cats and dogs. The cat, it seems, had not yet been domesticated back then, but the dog had.

So our pets have been hanging out with us for a long long time, and they have become very good at Putting Up With Us Humans <:-) !!!

I've known cats to like dogs, and dogs to like cats. Most cant stand each other though. Most cats dont even like each other, cats only tolerate humans bc they give them food and attention. It also depends on there upbringing its genetics for a dog to chase a cat or other small animal. If the cat dont run the dog probably wont chase it.

This goes back to the days before they were both domesticated. Each was a competitor for food, with the other. They both were taught to like humans.

Not all cats dislike dogs, and not all dogs dislike cats. Some dogs chase after cats because of the breed they are, they could possibly be hunting dogs and it's just in their instincts to chase odd animals. Cats tend to not like dogs because they are solitary animals, it also depends on their up-bringing. They both deal with us because... dogs are loyal and want to please their masters, like their pack leaders. Cats tolerate us because we feed and love them, otherwise they could care less.
