It is a mistake to illuminate medication from your treatment options. Medication does ad a layer of complexity to the problem, like in everyone reacts to psychotropic in different and sometime unexpected ways, but if you follow the Doctors instructions, you can make it through any serious problems that drugs may deal you. For example!
I was prescribed one medicine that made me feel better than I had every felt in my life.
However, about two weeks later, I suddenly felt like my mind had just abandoned me or something, but it was horrible.
I sat all night in my big chair and then had my wife drive me to my VA Doctor. He took me off that medication and prescribed a different one. I have been on Paxel ever since and it is very essential to my health and life.
Also, many people have to change medication over time because the body kind of adjusts to the med's and cancels the effectiveness.
I know what I am talking about, so please for your sake listen! I have years of experience with this subject and would be glad to share any knowledge if you have questions about your situation.
Email me if you wish.

I'm sorry. It's a self-perpetuating cycle isn't it? Been there, still am to some point. It will take as long or longer to recover than the initial trauma took to happen in the first place. For me, recovery started by taking an anti depressent. Once the big black cloud lifted off my shoulders (it only took a couple of weeks, not the month they told me it would) I could better figure out what the ONE thing I wanted to change the most was. Every now and then I relapse. Usually because the smallest dissapointment or let down I personalise, instead of realising it happens to everyone. The trick is once you start on your way, never let yourself have a "sorry for me day" for more than one day at a time. For people like us, that pattern of thinking and acting becomes a life source in itself. Just get to a doctor, get an antidepressant and in a couple of weeks let us know how your're feeling then. I really do think it is the starting place, and it will cost you very little.

Medication will not recover you, it will only numb you temporarily while the real issue festers. I have been diagnosed with PTSD. The bottom line is that you must face the traumatic event, no matter how painful it is. That is the only way to rewire your emotions to stop the pain. You can try exposure therapy or psychoanalytic therapy.

The treatment of choice for PTSD is EMDR which must be conducted by a trained mental health professional. Look on the EMDR web site for a list of trained clinicians in your area.

There are many alternative treatments to western medicine. "Mindfulness" is also an emerging psychology in North America.
Many western docs are also using "mindfulness" in addition to medications.
