How are metals protected from oxidizing?

1) by adding a less noble metal (for example Zn or aluminum to steel), which will corrode faster, meaning will oxidize faster). It's the same principle as in a battery - a more active metal will dissolve faster
2)by galvanization - physical protection by coating a corrosion-prone metal with a protective agent like zinc. Also a layer of paint, enamel, or plastic can be applied.
