What are the advantages of using a washing-up bowl as opposed to just washing things in the sink with a plug? Are there any?

If you have only one sink in the kitchen, then there is a huge advantage to a washing-up bowl. The same applies if there is a problem with the said sink. Not to mention the bowl is portable.

Otherwise I would just use the sink.

I prefer the dishpan method, but I have a single sink. I can pour the remainders of drinks down the sink while the dishes are soaking in the
dish pan. I can rinse the big items without getting soap bubbles on them from the dishpan.
I don't scratch my sink with cutlery. And I can store a few rinsed clean but not washed yet dishes in the pan in the cabinet under the sink until I get enough to wash.

I think the sink is just fine. There is more room in the sink if there is not washing up bowl.

Hah! I have long been asking this question. I think it is unhygienic - have you ever looked under the bowl?
The only sensible answer I have ever had, other than "we just do it because our mothers did" is that you can't empty something like tea, if the sink is full of water.
Most houses have double sinks today. It is a stupid reason.

Using washing up bowel this keeps the sink free for rinsing the dishes

Sinks have more bacteria than a toliet bowl unless they are scrubbed with an antibacterial cleaner and rinsed with very hot water every day. Using a separate bowl might be cleaner.

You can wash and still tip away really dirty water from inside other items. Not necessary if you have twin sinks.

Ok, you figured it out. I bought them in all shapes and colours. Grime sticks to the bottom of them. The water forms a vacuum underneath them. Things fall down the side of them.

They come in useful- when not used as a washing up bowl.

i.e. to soak things in- as a storage box etc!

Don't use either as you are just dissolving all the food waste and smearing it all over your washing up. Wash up under hot, running water.
