I have a 1996 honda accord v6. I pulled the code on the car and it said that the flow through my EGR valve is insufficient is it really that important to replace or have working. Do I need to replace the part or could it be something else (vacuum). I pulled the vacuum hose off but it had no vacuum. I figured this just might be due to the fact that the part doesn't use vacuum until it is hot or at higher RPM's or something.

EGR valves are designed to operate ONLY during a STEADY CRUISE condition to reduce NOx emissions. It does not open during acceleration, deceleration, or idle. If the code is P0401, it doesn't necessarily mean your EGR valve needs to be replaced. There could be excessive carbon buildup in the EGR passages in the intake restricting flow, which would only require cleaning out to repair. If your car is equipped with a EGR pressure transducer, it could be that part that needs to be replaced as well. An easy way to test EGR valve operation is to remove the vacuum supply to the valve, and apply your own vacuum to the valve with the engine at idle. If the engine starts to run rough, then you've verified your EGR valve is not faulty.

No error code tells an auto technician to replace anything. Error codes simply help lead the technician through a diagnostic tree of testing to determine why the code is being registered. The classic case is an Oxygen sensor code. Many times that just means the air/fuel mixture is wrong and not that you necessarily have a bad Oxygen sensor. You most likely need your EGR passages cleaned. Modern engines are designed to operate properly only when the EGR is functioning correctly. There is no reasonable alternative to making sure the EGR system is flowing exhaust gases to the intake manifold as designed.

EGR, exhaust gas recirculation is an important part of emissions if you care about passing them. it will affect how efficient your car runs on an emissions car. I.e. it is there to help it run properly the way the car is set up. you can find the egr and put your finger in it and push on the diaphragm and see if it moves freely. it only costs around $20 in my experiences and is a 2 bolt no brainer (usually a 10mm bolt) to remove and replace. if you had no vacuum to it check the lines for cracks. check other vacuum lines and see if they have vacuum. it most likely is the egr valve itself. your car would run very poorly if you have vacuum leaks.

I would defenetly replace the EGR valve, they are about $160 at a napa, part number is 2-26214. The EGR valve is very important for a car to run correctly, taking it off will not help the problem, cars tend to run better from the factory, so keep them that way.

EGR helps to reduce emissions. It's not that expensive a part to replace, and it is usually easily accessible. Your car is designed to use the EGR system and will not run as well without it.

Yes, it is important to change. It won't necessarily damage the engine, but you won't be able to pass your emissions test with that light on, and the malfunctioning egr.

its very important to replace. Wait until your car is driving down the highway and all of the sudden the engine jumps 4000 rpm.. or your waiting at a stop sign and the car is idling like its a mac truck. If you dont care about stalling, you dont care about jumping rpms, you dont care about rough idling, and you dont care about gas mileage, dont worry about it.

your (EGR) or exhaust gas recirculation valve is very important it increases your gas mileage by recirculating unburnt fluorocarbons or unburnt gas through your engine it also reduces emissions to the atmosphere

They just put extra useless parts and components on engines that don't do anything to make us pay more money for parts and stuff.

Get real.....
