My girlfriend took Plan B (emergency contraception) about a week a go, then 4 days later she started bleeding heavily. The next day she continued bleeding fairly heavily but it was brown blood. Today she is still bleeding brown blood and she is complaining of being nausaus and having pains a little higher than they usually are during a period and a little worse as well. She took Plan B soon after her period so the bleeding started on the 18th when she isn't supposed to get her next period until about the 5th. Should I be worried that something could be wrong. Nothing I've read seems to say a girl should have this much bleeding, pain, etc. Would these be signs of a pregnancy or possibly an ectopic pregancy? Thanks for your help, hopefully I'm just being overly worried...

I forgot to mention that she took the first Plan B pill within 24 hours and the second one 12 hours later in case that matters.

Acordding to Planned Parenthood's website, the following can happen after she takes Plan B:
+ Your next period may be earlier or later than usual.
+ Your flow may be heavier, lighter, more spotty, or the same as usual.

Also, half of the women who take the combination pills (Plan B) feel sick to their stomachs, but only for about 24 hours. Less than one out of five women vomit with combination pills.

I would wait just a few more days and if she is still bleeding and in a lot of pain, take her to the ER and have her get checked out. You don't want it to be something serious!

Good luck to you and her!

***Also, Plan B is NOT an abortion pill or any where close to it. Plan B prevents pregnancy. It can't, and won't, abort a pregnancy. Plan B prevents ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary), disrupts fertilization (joining of the egg and sperm), and inhibits implantation (attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterus).

Considering the time frame of having sex and taking the pill, your chances of being pregnant are slim. Plan B has a usual effect of cramps, light period or spotting. You also have to remember that while you have been stressing out about this, your body has been feeling the stress which can cause it to act in not so normal ways. Weather can aslo affect your period and sometimes your body can give off symptoms of being pregnant when you really arent. I'd say not to worry about it to much, take another test if you are still scared, but more than likely you've just stressed out your body a little to much lately.

Bleeding after taking plan B can be heavier than a period, and you might have cramping and nausea, too.

After taking plan B there is also an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. Your friend should not be taking these pills. They are too big of a dose of hormones for a woman's body. Not every woman will have side effects but does she really want to risk her reproductive health?

And despite what some might tell you, Plan B CAN act as an early abortion pill if a woman takes it right after she conceives. You might never know if you what your are seeing is a period.....or the remains of the tiny little baby.

How sad.......you might have been a father and never knew it.....

Why are you and your girlfriend sexually active? This is risky behavior! Aren't they teaching this in schools??? Practicing abstinence is 100% risk free and will free her (and you) of worries.

Take care.
