They were a nightmare. The leccy would run out and we'd be forced to knock on neighbours' doors, scrounging for 50ps.

I remember the nightmare, but wasn't it great when the leccy man arrived to empty the meter? Our mam would give us extra pocket money, so we'd all be happy that day. I remember every 3 months, we'd be told to watch out for the leccy man, on our way to school, see how far away from our street he was. Then the cry of " He's in Shakespeare Street" would be heard, and we'd all scurry back to our houses to pass on the news! Explaining away how those few cardboard coins came to be in the meter was a bugger though!

No but we were the main door that people would come to looking for 50ps because they knew that Mam and Dad were so nice that they would actually keep quite a stash of them set by just waiting for them to come and knock.

That's when 50p meant something.

Yes - we used to wait on a main road and flag taxis down - some would charge me a pound for a 50p - if I was desperate I'd take it!

Yeah, I know, I know....my miser landlady did not even suspect me!!
