I'm a high school teacher and one of my students explained it to me this way; she said that used between friends, its like saying dude or bro or homey or whatever. But when used other ways it is racist. Take the word b*tch for example. My friends and I will say, "Hey, b*tch" as a greeting sometimes. Totally fine. However, if a non-friend called me a b*tch, I would be upset. Unfortunatley because of the n words history, it can be upsetting to hear, but that's the world we live in.

Black people calling other black people "******" is not the same as a white person or any other race calling a black person "******". If a white person calls another white person honkey (for honkey tonk patron), cracker (southern white trash), gringo (latino term for whites), afrosaxon (white person "behaving" black), gweilo (Chinese for White Devil), haole (Hawaiian for white invader) Ofay (African American slang for whites derived from ofe from Ibibio - an African language), Opie (Mayberry reference toward whites used by some Black Americans) , Peckerwood (Poor Southern Black term for Poor Southern Whites referring to the Southern redneck's boisterous demeanor) Twinkie (used by American Indians for whites) WASP (used by everyone to denote the powerful elite whites) he or she wouldn't think much of it because how could there possibly be racial intent? But if a black person or a person of any other race other than caucasian used it, it would have the intent of humiliating or insulting. Blacks calling each other "******" doesn't mean much of anything anymore. It started as a way to desensitize each other to this word, and to remind each other that they are members of a race that have a lot to overcome and that they should maintain unity in order to overcome the inherent disavantages of being black in a white controlled nation. Later it just became part of the common way of many black youth to address each other. Most older black people don't do this because for them, it is still that derogatory term representing a time they'd rather not think about so much. It's not that big of a deal among blacks, but it is THEIR deal, and they can call each other what they want and let the individuals among them take offense. And many young black people do take offense and believe that this word should begin to vanish so that as a nation we can all just get on with it. I've heard black people say to other black people when addressed this way, "I am not your "******". It's not a white person's problem until whites try to use it...then it takes on a whole new meaning. Problem is, really, that white youth also do not comprehend the intent of insult and humiliation that "******" came to be used for way back before they were born. So they find themeselves in a lot of awkward situations when they try to be in-tune to the black reality by saying "Mah ******" and so on. They just get stared at, knocked down, called "wigger" and/or penalized, all the while wondering why there is the appearance of a double standard. With the populus becoming more and more intergrated, the term "******" or any other variation thereof will begin to lose its venue and will probably be replaced with some other derogatory term to represent the common problem of poverty and the intrinsic lack of opportunity. Maybe something like "fiend" to represent the plight of the poor of all races falling into the abyss of drug abuse, the new class of victims of the rich. In the United States of the future, as the middle class disappears and the rich elite of all races have the poor of all races working for crumbs that roll off the tables of the wealthy, the word "******" if still around, may become the common greeting among all races of citizens who are simply poor as hell, and if you will forgive me, slaving for basic survival.

The Romans first used the word ***** as in their language it meant brown, but in our times it has been used with hatred and venom to imply that black people were inferior.

It's because when another race uses it, it is usually used in a derrogatory sense. There is no reason for anyone to use that word...regardless of their skin.
