The easiest way is to separate the clothes by making 3 basic piles. Whites, colors, and dark. Note that reds, especially new should be washed with darks or separate.

Make sure you read the lable of the clothing if you are unsure. and Never do wool items unless you know what you are doing. Delicate items like dressy items need special care too and should be washed on the delicate cycle of the machine. Check the labels and they should let you know any special care.

The size of the machine will depend on how much to put in. Don't pack the clothes in tight. Loosely fill the wash tub with clothes spread evenly around.

You can wash the whites in hot water with or with out bleach. However, they will do fine with bleach in cold water too. I used a dertergent that has color safe bleach added. So I can do all the clothes in the same detergent.

If some items have stains you can pretreat with a little detergent. On light items for the most part you can also use Hydrogen Peroxide, this is great for blood and most other stains. Look at stain removal sites for more ways to wash an item with stains. If the item had a stain make sure it is out before drying. You may have to treat and re wash it a couple of times, it will atleast fade if not disappear.

Drying the clothes is just a matter of the heat temperature. I never dry the bras in the dryer as that shortens their life span. I always dry my t shirts and shirts on the delicate cycle as they just about dry and don't shrink. The hotest or normal cycle is for things like towels, jeans, and heavy items. Even on the hottest cycle it should only take about 60 mins to dry.

Laundry falls into several groups:

Most articles of clothing have specific care instructions on the label. Check that first.

I would suggest that you seperate the cloths into three piles...whites.....light colored fabrics and dark colored fabrics.

Do not wash blue jeans with anything other than blue jeans. Their dye can run and get on everything else.

Some brightly colored things (red in particular) can also run, so follow the tag if it says "wash seperatedly or wash alone.

Most of todays fabrics should be washed in warm or cold water. Hot water is out. It shrinks fabrics and costs you more besides. The only exception would be if you are washing very greasy (motor oil and the like) clothes. They may require hot water to work the best.

If you have anything wool, it needs to be done in cold water and preferably by hand in a mild detergent. (It must say washable on it though) You can not put those wool items in the dryer. They will shrink.

Cotton fabrics wrinkle on high heat more than if you use a low heat setting on the dryer. You will still probably have to iron those though.

Permenant press stuff goes on a medium or lower heat setting also to avoid wrinkles.

I dry jeans on a permanent press setting also because then they do not shrink as much but it does take longer.

Don't overload the washer or the dryer. Don't pack it. If you do things dont work the way they should.

wash your whites in hot water with bleach, and then wash them again in hot water and detergent
