FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - When school officials announce the name of the Fresno High School prom king on Saturday, Cinthia Covarrubias will be wearing a tuxedo just like the six boys vying for the honor.

School officials this week added the 17-year-old's name to the ballot for prom king, reversing a previous district protocol that allowed only males to run for king and females for prom queen.

Gay youth advocates called it a landmark victory for campus gender expression and said they believe it's the first time in the U.S. that an openly transgender student has run for prom royalty.

If you are a boy Run for king. If you are a girl , run for Queen.Boy king, girl Queen. Anything else makes the honor a joke. The local high school in my city would not let them have a yearbook last year because it had a picture of the cutiest couple in it. The couple was 2 girls. It went to court & the judge sided with the school sighting a little known law about a couple being a man & a women. I know it is a OLD,OLD law but it is still on the books. So far no on one in this state has tryed to change it.I hope they never do to me if you are born a boy , you are a boy. The same for girls. GOD knows what he made & he does not make mistakes but man does.

I grew up in a very small town and High School was were all the activity was except for getting drunk and making out. I even did some of that at school. LOL It's hard to believe I survived High School and I was an "A" Student. School is were Girls were and were I played Football so I had a blast. It didn't hurt that by the time I started High school my Dad had quit drinking (He was one of the worst alcoholics I have ever seen) . Mom was still a pain but Dad and I became best friends, So I guess my view of my High school years is a little biased. The School Dances were big events in a small town that had one movie theater with just one screen, no fast food restaurants and no malls. We didn't get Rock Concerts coming within 150 miles so I didn't see my first Live Concert until I went away to college unless you count local bands playing at the Dances.

Be transgender all u want. But I thought the definition of a king was a male. 100%! Not a man trapped in a woman's body. I mean, come on! Really?! Some things should be left alone and traditional. Please let the sex of my kid's prom king be one of them!

I say good for her! High school is such a tough time of life. If she's that comfortable with herself and feels comfortable sticking up for what she thinks is right then more power to her!

Actually I'm wondering why in America we feel the need to elect royalty in high school.

I think this has no place in our school systems. Try to have a reiligous group or the boy scouts on school grounds and they are treated like you just shot JFK. A high school student wants to say they are gay, or there just expressing themselves. Bull!! If they are gay, fine be gay, it is your right. But if you alow this you have to alow other points of view and expression and the schools right now only want one side.

Phags will be phags. Why they feel the need to share their proclivities with the rest of us, I do not understand. If I were to wear a t-shirt proclaiming that I like girls, I would be seen as strange, but phags scream their sexual preference from the rooftops and then tell us how suppressed they are. *Rolls eyes*

If everyone ignored her she would disappear. What you are witnessing is an attention whore. What do they mean by transgender though? Has she had a sex change operation? 17 is a little young for that isn't it?

That's disgusting.Just goes to show how liberals and other confused people want to bring down our way of life..This is very troubling and a perfect example why we should never allow the liberals to take over this great country

I didn't know that's what they were calling it now. I think it should be called something more fitting, like gender confusion.

And no, it should not be in our schools.

dglaze raises a good point: Is ROTC allowed in that school?
