surley it does not say much for your army or police force if people need to have weapons to protect themselves. as for hunting the indians coped before the brits took guns to the usa right.

My question to those who support guns in the USA is what if the police had showed up to Virginia Tech and there had been four or five guys waving around handguns. That would have made a sad day even sadder, I think. The American psyche demands that there's a hero to this story, but there isn't. Somehow that translates into "if there was another guy with a gun, he would have shot the killer and been that hero". The sad truth is that if another person had had another gun, there probably would have been more death that day. Give up the guns, America.

Interesting question. I just had a class discussion on this one. Some people want to abolish the second amendment, but we have a constitutional right to bear arms. Just because someone with obvious mental problems massacres people we think that guns are bad. People use guns to hunt for their food and protect this country. That's like watching an accident and saying we need to ban all vehicle because vehicles kill people. It's amazing if you look at this in reverse. What if someone would have killed Cho Seung-Hui? Then people would have said that he was a nice guy and had never hurt anyone, that he just kept to himself. That he was shy and didn't talk to anyone. We now know that this is not the case but it might have been. I would not have thought him to be mad. Banning guns won't stop the blood shed, there will always be ways to weapons. Look at the attempt to ban alcohol during prohibition. I think it's time we started using good moral judgment and stop to think once-in-a-while. My deepest sympathies for the families and students in Virginia and anywhere else where they are feeling pain.

This is a very hot button issue. Most Americans are in favor of some sort of gun legislation and those who are not are very passionate about their right to use guns. America is a violent country with its militaristic attitude toward foreign policy and its advanced destructive technology. With that said there is no reason at all Americans should be possessing pistols, automatic weapons and semi-automatic weapons. The argument for guns is about hunting or protecting property especially out west. The argument for protection is very weak because those who use it will never be efficient enough to protect themselves or to properly use a weapon. Because persons have to have a drivers license to drive and that takes studying, practice driving, and passing an exam, there should be something like this to posses a gun of any kind. Like the different drivers licenses we can impose the same for the many different weapons.

The attackers are always armed. Even in the countries which have extremely strict gun laws (like where I live). Simply because it is extremely easy to ship a ton AK-47's from China just as simple as shipping a ton of cocaine from Colombia or a ton of hashish from Morocco.
The only thing which might help is getting weapons (and training) to the potential victims.
I cound quote a zilion sources to prove that this approach works. But seeing as your mind is already made up there is no point of confusing you with facts.

Nope, Its been stated a million times, and ill state it again. "Guns dont kill people, stupid people kill people" There should be an even more rigourous and extensive background check for people who do decide to purchase guns. Also loop holes that alllow some people with a history of "mental issues" should be closed.

Look at Nazi Germany. They took away guns from the people right before the government stepped in and took over.

Every country that has legislated strong gun control laws has had an increase of violent crime, including an increase in crimes in which guns were used by criminals who ignored the gun control laws and purchased firearms on the black market.
