My Mustang convertible was in the garage all winter and won't start up today. It's the battery, right? Well, I've never jump started a car, just watched a zillion times. Do you hook up the opposite colors? This is important so don't tell me something unless you're sure so I don't kill or maim myself.

NO, not opposite colors.

Red on both sides to the Positive (+) terminals on both cars.

Black to "good" car's Negative (-) terminal and THEN Black to "dead" car's engine block or frame, NOT to "dead" car's Negative terminal -- too much chance of a spark near battery.

Here's the run down"
First, start the running, or "DONOR" car (so you don't kill IT'S battery!).
Being CAREFUL to avoid the whirling fan, belts, etc, connect the RED end of the jumper cable to the POSITIVE terminal of the DONOR car. Connect other end to the the POSITIVE terminal of the DONEE (dead) car.
Connect BLACK end of cable to NEGATIVE (ground) terminal of DONOR car (or connect to a good ground, i.e., no paint, rust, etc).
Connect other end to a good ground (NOT THE BATTERY TERMINAL) of the dead car.
The thinking here is, while charging, a battery emits Hydrogen gas (think the Hindenburg!). Connecting the ground to the dead car last (preferably, as far away from the battery as the cable will reach), any spark will be generated by this last connection (when the circuit is complete).
Once the dead car is running again, remove the cable ends in the reverse order.
Turn off ALL electronics (radio, A/C, etc) of both cars while jumping. You might have to rev the DONOR car (2,000-2,500 RPM) for a little bit to get enough juice into the dead battery.
After car starts, drive it for a MINIMUM of 20 minutes, to charge the battery.
Hopes this helps!

ok it easy, look for the + on the battery, that be the hot post, so you put the red cable on it, an the black cable on the - side, make sure you start the other car, after , doing this, that way you still have a hot battery
