Common sense is based on the principle that you won't do stuff to other people that you wouldn't want done to you.
Much repeated, but true.
And yes, more and more we are revolving into a society that is based on egoism and the 'me first' attitude. Lack of consideration causes us to hurt other people because we are hell-bent on focusing on what makes the 'self' happy. It has become acceptable to do whatever we feel like it, without thinking of the consequences, because 'I' come first.
Partners are cheated on, children are neglected, people are killed, the elderly treated unkindly, the environment destroyed...the list goes on and on because we refuse to think further than our own immediate pleasure. We throw away our values for fear of being classified as 'old fashioned' and 'conservative' or 'strange' and then are shocked when we learn of the unspeakable things that are done.
Kudos to for bringing up a simple yet profound question.
Hope you find the answer you're looking for.

"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen."
ALBERT EINSTEIN
I don't believe in it. It's what is commonly accepted as fact and taken to be obvious without the necessary proof. It's common sens that the world is flat even though it's roundish! OK is was common sense that the world is flat.

Common sense and a respect for other people. I have seen too many instances this week alone, of people looking for attention and sympathy for themselves, racial and hostile remarks towards Black people, and threats of violence against those who speak up and tell it like it is. The thought that someone has to have their ridiculous delusions of grandeur reinforced just because they are used to getting what they want, is so pathetic. I am tired of people putting down my Black brothers and sisters, I am tired of my people suffering, and the abusers who use this as a means to try and continue terror. They are no better than the culprits of September 11 or the bombings in the Tube. Common sense would dictate that those thoughts and ideas are not fostered, and are discouraged, they are not of benefit to society, they spread hate, and that is the reason for all of the misery in the world. But, because of people like them, their campaign of counter-productive destruction is what makes it feel like the world is going to hell in a hand basket. Darkchild, my sister, I pray that we have peace soon, and an end to ignorance.

Common sense and street sense go hand in hand but these days academia is more highly regarded than sense. Go figure!

No. People have always been stupid. The majority of americans are christians. Needless to say, christians have been responsible for a lot of things that we don't consider common sense nowadays. Of course, this is if you don't believe in witch hunting.

Its the ability to be able to distinguish right from wrong, good or bad; to ba able to judge without prejudice, to reason fairly, to be responsible for his speech & actions....
As all other human abilities, some of us have some don't, nothing to do with nowadays or in bygone days.
