I think it looks like a piece of dirty quartz. It is rounded on the edges and dingy. Many are not the "clear" diamonds you think of and will have impurities that give it a color from gray to black to yellow. You may overlook it if you are not sure what to look for.

Most of them look pretty rubbish, a lot of them look like lumps of washing soda. If you are very lucky you can find relatively shiny natural ones that form tetrahedrons. But to really get them looking nice, you need to cut and polish them.
