Camouflage to fit in with the dirt and rocks where they live.
They have absolutely beautiful eyes, though.
In my younger days I felt sure this was the meaning of the Shakespeare lines from "As You Like It."
Sweet are the uses of adversity, which, like a toad, though ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in its head.
I have trouble even seeing them as ugly, though. They are so gentle, harmless and beneficial in the garden.

It's all relative. To another toad one toad may seem to be beautiful. Imagine you were a regular guy toad and the Halle Berry of toads showed up at your door............... hmmmmmmmmm

Toads are ugly because people are too closeminded to see through appearances and preconceptions. Admire the coloration and patterning, think of what wonderful camoflage that is in a world of animals that want to eat them. Think of all the bugs they eat, and how much more comfortable that makes you. Maybe if you learned a little bit about them, they might not be so ugly.
I, as well, personally think they are beautiful.

Gareth, terrible odour? maybe if kept in a tank and not cleaned. Their skin is how it's supposed to be.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe they look like that because a witch cast an evil spell on them. I don't think they are that ugly. Some of them have beautiful golden eyes.
