Install a dead bolt. They aren't that expensive.
Using a padlock would look bad and then people would know you aren't home and could use bolt cutters on it and get in anyway. good luck

hi not meaning to be awkward...but a normal lock??
or a sliding bolt with a big padlock! ugly but effective! there are screws that only do up, they are slanted so that they are unscrewable once positioned, get it right or you have a problem! but they are great for external use on screens etc.
those nifty little travel door alarms are good too, when anyone touches the door handle etc they squeal very loudly, embarassing to an intruder while they are on the outside! bit of a nusiance to the owner also though..esp if you are late home :-)

Don't forget that you need your landlord's permission to make any alterations to the structure, and that some alterations are illegal. You may not, for instance, attempt to prevent all entry by others when you are not there, such as the police, fire inspectors, or emergency rescue personnel. If you believe that you have possessions within that you cannot afford to lose, there are two solutions: first, store them in an approved locker facility, and two, take out an insurance policy on them. Oh yeah, and the simplest security measure - lock your door!

Something simple but effective...a steel reinforced door with a double deadbolt...it will keep most average blokes out anyway.

Buy a freakin' lock. That's why they make them. OR MOVE to a better neighborhood.
